Walk On is Tom Scholz's album in every sense but the singing. He wrote or co-wrote all ten tracks, produced and engineered the record, and played guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums himself, the same one-man-studio approach he used on the earlier Boston albums. The composer column reflects his legal name, Donald Thomas Scholz, where the credited 'Tom Scholz' appears. The one true change is the voice: with Brad Delp gone, Fran Cosmo handles all lead vocals, the only Boston studio album where Delp does not sing. Delp is still present as a writer, sharing credit with Scholz and David Sikes on the two 'Walk On' medley pieces, so his name survives in the credits even though his voice does not.
Walk On is the fourth studio album by Boston, released June 7, 1994 on MCA Records after an eight-year gap since Third Stage. It is the only Boston studio album without founding lead vocalist Brad Delp, who left the band in 1990; Fran Cosmo takes over lead vocals across the record. As on every Boston album, mastermind Tom Scholz wrote or co-wrote the material, produced it, engineered it, and played most of the instruments, backed by guitarist Gary Pihl, bassist David Sikes, and drummer Doug Huffman. The album leans on Scholz's signature layered guitars and a multi-part 'Walk On' suite that threads through the second half, alongside the lead single 'I Need Your Love.' Brad Delp still appears in the songwriting credits, co-writing the two 'Walk On' medley tracks even in his absence. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in the United States.
