Data Insight

Don't Look Back is Tom Scholz's album in almost every sense. The MIT-trained engineer wrote or co-wrote all eight songs, produced the record, and played guitars, organ, piano, and bass across it, cutting most of it in his own Hideaway Studio. Because the writing is his, the composer credits carry his legal name, Donald Thomas Scholz, on the six tracks he wrote alone, joined by Bradley Edward Delp on 'Party' and standing aside for Delp's solo-written 'Used to Bad News.' Brad Delp sang every lead and added rhythm guitar, while Barry Goudreau, Fran Sheehan, and Sib Hashian rounded out the band on guitar, bass, and drums. The credited songwriter names stay in their common forms, Tom Scholz and Brad Delp, while the composer column shifts to the birth names.

Don't Look Back is the second studio album by Boston, released August 15, 1978 on Epic Records. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and sold more than a million copies within ten days of release. Tom Scholz built the record around his own multi-tracked guitars, keyboards, and bass, wrote or co-wrote every song, and produced the album himself, extending the self-made approach of the 1976 debut. The title track reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by 'A Man I'll Never Be' at number 31 and 'Feelin' Satisfied' at number 46. The album has been certified 7x Platinum by the RIAA and remains one of the defining arena-rock statements of the era.
