Corporate America is the one Boston album where Tom Scholz shares the pen. He still writes, produces, engineers, arranges, and plays bass, drums, guitar, and keyboards across the record under his legal name Donald Thomas Scholz, but for the first time he gives full songs to other members: Anthony Cosmo wrote 'Stare Out Your Window,' 'Turn It Off,' and 'Cryin',' and Kimberley Dahme wrote 'With You.' The album closer 'Didn't Mean to Fall in Love' is a rare Scholz co-write, credited with Curly Smith and Janet Minto (Janet Morrison Minto). Lead vocals rotate between Brad Delp, Fran Cosmo, Scholz, and Dahme rather than sitting with a single voice, so the composer column here reads as a small band of writers instead of Scholz alone.
Corporate America is the fifth studio album by Boston, released November 2002 on Artemis Records and the band's first record for a label other than Epic. Mastermind Tom Scholz wrote, produced, engineered, and played most of the instruments, but he opened the songwriting to his bandmates for the first time, handing whole tracks to guitarist Anthony Cosmo and to newcomer Kimberley Dahme. Brad Delp returned to sing lead alongside Fran Cosmo and Dahme, making it the last Boston album released in Delp's lifetime and the final one to feature Fran Cosmo. The title track and 'I Had a Good Time' anchor a record that mixes Scholz's signature layered guitar arena rock with softer, more contemporary material from the younger writers. It reached number 42 on the Billboard 200 and number 3 on the Independent Albums chart, and it remains out of print because of later litigation between Scholz and Artemis.
