By the Numbers
Authorship on this record is almost entirely Tom Scholz. He wrote every song alone except 'Didn't Mean to Fall in Love,' co-written with drummer Curly Smith and Janet Minto, and he produced, engineered, and played the instruments across the album at his Hideaway Studio. Because Scholz composes under his birth name, the composer column reads Donald Thomas Scholz while the lyricist column keeps the familiar Tom Scholz. The vocals tell the harder story: Brad Delp died in 2007, so his four lead performances are archival takes Scholz preserved, and the other singers - Tommy DeCarlo, David Victor, Kimberley Dahme, and Scholz himself - were slotted in around them. Toby Mountain mastered the record.
Life, Love & Hope is the sixth and final studio album by Boston, released December 3, 2013 on Frontiers Records, eleven years after Corporate America and the band's first record for a label other than a major. Tom Scholz wrote, produced, engineered, and played nearly every instrument, recording at his own Hideaway Studio as he had across the whole Boston catalog. The album is built around a rotating cast of singers rather than a single frontman, because founding vocalist Brad Delp died in 2007 and his voice survives here only through archival recordings Scholz had banked before his death. Delp sings lead on four tracks, while Tommy DeCarlo, David Victor, Kimberley Dahme, and Scholz himself carry the rest, joined by guests Louis St. August and Jude Nejmanowski. Several songs are reworked versions of material dating back to the Corporate America sessions, marked as '2.0' in the track listing, so the record functions partly as a completion of unfinished work. It reached number 37 on the Billboard 200 and is Boston's last album of new music.
