By the Numbers
Waking the Fallen is the first album written by the full classic lineup, with every track credited to the band as a unit. M. Shadows and The Rev anchor the songwriting, and the only outside name is co-writer Scott Gilman on the opening title track. With no covers and no hired writers, the record is an entirely in-house effort that began the band's rise.
Waking the Fallen is the second studio album by Avenged Sevenfold, released in August 2003 and the first to feature the classic lineup, with Synyster Gates on lead guitar and Johnny Christ on bass. Produced by Andrew Murdock, it sharpens the band's melodic metalcore into longer, more ambitious songs while keeping the screamed-and-sung dynamic of the debut. The full band shares the writing, with M. Shadows and the late drummer The Rev central to the songcraft. Singles 'Unholy Confessions' and 'Chapter Four' became fan favorites, and the album drew growing attention from the wider metal world. It set the stage for the breakthrough that followed.
