By the Numbers
Nightmare carries a heavy authorship story: The Rev, James Sullivan, wrote much of it before his death and is the sole writer on 'Natural Born Killer' and 'Fiction,' with co-writes across several other tracks. The rest is split among the surviving members, and there are no covers, so the entire album is the band's own writing, completed after the loss of its drummer.
Nightmare is the fifth studio album by Avenged Sevenfold, released in July 2010 and recorded in the shadow of drummer The Rev's death in December 2009. Sullivan had written and demoed much of the album before he died, and the band completed it with session drummer Mike Portnoy playing his parts. Produced by Mike Elizondo, the record is heavy and grief-stricken, closing with the elegiac 'Save Me' and 'Fiction,' the last song Sullivan wrote. It became the band's first number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum, a commercial peak born of tragedy.
