Data Insight

Rock in a Hard Place was recorded with the most depleted lineup of Aerosmith's career: Joe Perry had already left, and Brad Whitford departed during the 1981 sessions. Their places were taken by Jimmy Crespo, who co-wrote much of the album with Steven Tyler, and Rick Dufay on rhythm guitar. Whitford does appear on 'Lightning Strikes' despite his exit. The record includes a cover of 'Cry Me a River' (written by Arthur Hamilton), with the bulk of the originals credited to the Tyler-Crespo partnership rather than the classic Tyler-Perry team.

Aerosmith's seventh studio album, released August 2, 1982. The only Aerosmith studio album without Joe Perry or Brad Whitford, Perry had departed in 1979 and Whitford left in 1981. The lineup for this record consisted of Tyler, replacement guitarist Jimmy Crespo, rhythm guitarist Rick Dufay, Tom Hamilton, and Joey Kramer. Crespo co-writes on seven of ten tracks, making him the dominant co-writer alongside Tyler. 'Cry Me a River' (Arthur Hamilton) is the album's sole cover. The album was a commercial disappointment, reaching number 32 on the Billboard 200, and is generally considered the band's weakest record.
