Nine Lives broke from the Bruce Fairbairn era and came together only after a troubled start, which left its fingerprints on the songwriting. Early sessions with producer Glen Ballard were largely scrapped before Kevin Shirley reworked the album, yet Ballard's writing survived on 'Pink,' 'Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees),' and 'Taste of India.' The outside-writer roster expanded with Marti Frederiksen co-writing three tracks and Desmond Child returning for two, while 'Pink' paired Tyler with both Richie Supa and Ballard. The honest picture is a band still relying on hired songwriters to shape its hits, even mid-decade and on a new label.
Aerosmith's twelfth studio album, released March 18, 1997. Recorded after a chaotic pre-production process that included firing original producer Glen Ballard, who nonetheless retains co-writing credits on three tracks he contributed to before departing. Kevin Shirley was brought in as replacement producer. Marti Frederiksen enters the Aerosmith orbit here for the first time as a key co-writer on three tracks, beginning a long-running collaboration. Glen Ballard's co-writes include 'Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees),' 'Taste of India,' and 'Pink.' 'Full Circle' features Taylor Rhodes, who also co-wrote 'Cryin'' on the previous album. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard 200.
