Data Insight

TLC's debut was a collaboration between the group and producer Dallas Austin, who co-wrote most of the singles with rapper Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes. Lopes shares writing credit on Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg, What About Your Friends, and Hat 2 da Back, supplying the raps that defined the group's early sound. The biggest hit, the ballad Baby-Baby-Baby, was the exception, written entirely by the LaFace team of L.A. Reid, Babyface, and Daryl Simmons. Members have a writing credit on 9 of the 15 tracks.

Ooooooohhh... on the TLC Tip is the debut studio album by TLC, released in February 1992 on LaFace Records and produced by Dallas Austin and L.A. Reid and Babyface, the commercial introduction of the Atlanta trio (Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, and Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas) and the album that established the New Jack Swing-influenced R&B-hip-hop hybrid that would become the commercial template for 1990s female group pop. T-Boz and Left Eye contributed rap verses while Chilli sang melodic hooks, with Dallas Austin providing the primary production framework; 'Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg,' 'Baby-Baby-Baby,' and 'What About Your Friends' were the principal singles. 'Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg' reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 and generated the group's signature visual identity, oversized clothing, Left Eye's condom-on-glasses aesthetic, and the coordinated but individually expressive styling that represented a new model for female pop group identity. Ooooooohhh... on the TLC Tip has been certified six-times platinum in the United States and reached number 14 on the Billboard 200; it established TLC as the most commercially significant female group in R&B and set the commercial foundation for CrazySexyCool.
