The band's sixth album was produced entirely in-house by Jared and Shannon Leto with Stevie Aiello, reinforcing the self-contained creative model the band has operated under since America. There is one notable exception in the songwriting: a cover of The Doors' 'People Are Strange,' the only track across the entire 30STM discography not written by Jared Leto, a single asterisk on an otherwise spotless authorship record. The album title is also a deliberate riff on R.E.M.'s 1987 anthem 'It's the End of the World as We Know It,' nodding to end-of-era anxieties while doubling as a statement of the band's own longevity.
