Data Insight

Rated R was Rihanna's dark, defiant turn, and she executive produced it while co-writing most of the lyrics with collaborators including Ne-Yo and The-Dream. The aggressive, rock-tinged sound came from producers such as Chase & Status, Stargate, and Tricky Stewart, anchored by the number-one hit Rude Boy.

Rated R is the fifth studio album by Rihanna, released in November 2009 on Def Jam Records and produced by Chase & Status, The-Dream, No I.D., and others, recorded in the aftermath of the February 2009 assault by Chris Brown that resulted in his criminal conviction, and widely interpreted as a document of the psychological and emotional experience of the period following that event, with the album's dark, militaristic aesthetic and lyrical confrontation with violence and power reflecting a deliberate creative response to what had occurred. Rihanna co-wrote or wrote several tracks; the album's thematic coherence, unusual in the catalog, which had tended toward single-driven collections, and the conceptual framing of the imagery, video treatments, and sonic choices as a unified artistic statement distinguished it from her previous work. 'Russian Roulette', with its extended extended metaphor of intimate risk, was released as the lead single and reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100; 'Hard' (featuring Young Jeezy) and 'Rude Boy' (a more dancehall-oriented track released from the album's reissue) were the follow-up commercial tracks. Rated R debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and has been certified platinum in the United States; it is regarded by critics as the most artistically significant album in Rihanna's catalog and the clearest evidence that she is capable of shaping her own creative direction rather than simply executing producer and label choices.
