Rated R is the fifth studio album by Rihanna, released in November 2009 on Def Jam Records and produced by Chase & Status, The-Dream, No I.D., and others, recorded in the aftermath of the February 2009 assault by Chris Brown that resulted in his criminal conviction, and widely interpreted as a document of the psychological and emotional experience of the period following that event, with the album's dark, militaristic aesthetic and lyrical confrontation with violence and power reflecting a deliberate creative response to what had occurred.
