Data Insight

No Strings Attached marks the point where NSYNC started writing their own songs, with members credited on 5 of the 12 tracks against zero on their debut. JC Chasez drove that shift, co-writing four cuts including Space Cowboy (Yippie-Yi-Yay) and Digital Get Down, and Justin Timberlake co-wrote I'll Be Good for You. The hit singles still came from outside: Sweden's Cheiron team of Max Martin, Rami Yacoub, Kristian Lundin and Andreas Carlsson wrote It's Gonna Be Me and Bye Bye Bye, while Richard Marx wrote the ballad This I Promise You.

No Strings Attached is the third studio album by *NSYNC, released in March 2000 on Jive Records and produced by Max Martin, The Neptunes, and others, still the best-selling debut week in US chart history at the time of its release, selling 2.416 million copies in its first week. The band performed all vocals; Timberlake and Chasez co-wrote several tracks for the first time, including 'Bye Bye Bye' (written by Kristian Lundin and Andreas Carlsson), 'It's Gonna Be Me,' 'This I Promise You,' and 'Space Cowboy'; 'Bye Bye Bye' spent three weeks at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the defining *NSYNC single. No Strings Attached sold over 13 million copies in the United States and remains the fastest-selling album in US chart history in its opening week; it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and generated the most commercially successful pop album of 2000. The album is the commercial peak of *NSYNC's career and the record that most directly competed with Backstreet Boys' Millennium for the title of defining late 1990s boy-band album.
