Data Insight

Celebrity is NSYNC's most self-authored album: members co-wrote 10 of its 12 tracks after deciding to take creative control of their music. Justin Timberlake co-wrote all three singles, working with Wade Robson on Pop and Gone and with The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo on Girlfriend, while JC Chasez wrote and produced across the record. The leap previewed the solo writing and production careers Timberlake and Chasez pursued once the group went on hiatus.

Celebrity is the fourth studio album by *NSYNC, released in July 2001 on Jive Records and produced by Max Martin, The Neptunes, BT, Richard Marx, and others, the band's final studio album before their de facto dissolution, as Timberlake's desire to pursue solo work and the group's commercial deceleration both contributed to an indefinite hiatus that never resolved into a formal reunion. Timberlake co-wrote several tracks, most prominently 'Gone' (written with Richard Marx), which demonstrated his ballad-writing ability in a way that anticipated his solo work, alongside 'Pop,' 'Girlfriend,' and 'Bye Bye Bye (Reprise).' The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 1.879 million first-week sales and has been certified four-times platinum in the United States; 'Pop' reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100. Celebrity is regarded as the conclusion of the *NSYNC commercial story and the album that most directly reveals Timberlake's growing impatience with the boy-band format, with his solo writing contributions pointing toward the direction his career would take once the group formally stopped recording.
