Rock Steady is the fifth studio album by No Doubt, released in December 2001 on Interscope Records and produced by Sly and Robbie, Steely & Clevie, Mark 'Spike' Stent, William Orbit, and others, recorded partly in Jamaica with legendary dancehall producers and incorporating reggae, dancehall, and electronic production into the ska-pop framework in a way that demonstrated the breadth of Stefani's creative interests. Stefani, Dumont, and Kanal wrote all material; 'Hey Baby,' 'Underneath It All' (with Lady Saw), and 'Running' were the principal tracks; 'Hey Baby' won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, has been certified four-times platinum in the United States, and won the Grammy for Best Pop Album. Rock Steady is regarded as the creative peak of the band's mature period and the album that most fully realized the global music synthesis that their Southern California ska roots had pointed toward. Rock Steady's commercial and Grammy success, including the Best Pop Album win, positioned it as both the creative peak of the band's mature period and the last fully realized No Doubt album before the hiatus and solo career that would intervene between it and Push and Shove, giving it a retrospective valedictory quality as the concluding statement of the band's second great creative chapter.
