Data Insight

Nicky Jam wrote or co-wrote fourteen of the sixteen tracks and is the only credited writer on six of them, a heavy authorship load for a Pina Records roster album of this period, when label writers usually carried the hooks. Rafael Pina takes a writing credit on three songs and every one of them is a collaboration with a guest. The two Nicky Jam had no hand in are Sacando Chispa, credited to Pina with Trebol Clan and David D'Ambulante, and Ya No Me Llamas, credited to Shaka Black and Benny. Production is spread wide rather than held by one team: Luny Tunes touches eight tracks, Nesty five, DJ Joe and DJ Fat three together, and Naldo, Eliel, Harry Digital and Rafy Mercenario take what is left.

Nicky Jam had spent most of a decade on guest verses and label compilations before Pina Records gave him a full studio album of his own. The sixteen tracks pull in the San Juan production circuit of the moment, with Luny Tunes and Nesty behind Chambonea and Va Pasando El Tiempo and DJ Joe, DJ Fat, Rafy Mercenario and Eliel splitting the rest. Guests run through the whole record: Polaco, Trebol Clan, Don Chezina, Lito MC Cassidy and a very young R.K.M & Ken-Y all take verses. It reached 23 on Billboard Top Latin Albums and entered the Spanish album chart at 79.

Frequently Asked Questions Vida escante

How high did Vida escante chart?
It peaked at 23 on Billboard Top Latin Albums and 4 on Tropical Albums. In Spain it entered the PROMUSICAE album chart at 79 on 13 March 2005, the first time a Nicky Jam album appeared on that chart.
Who produced Vida escante?
Production is split across the San Juan circuit. Luny Tunes and Nesty handle Chambonea, Va Pasando El Tiempo and several others, DJ Joe and DJ Fat take Sacando Chispa, Pasado and Como Tú Me Pisas, and Rafy Mercenario, Eliel, Naldo, Harry Digital, DJ Magic and Ken-Y cover the rest. Rafael Pina was the executive producer.
Is the 2005 Special Edition the same album?
No. The reissue that Pina and Machete put out on 19 July 2005 drops La Paga, Tus Ojos and Loco, adds a spanglish rework of Tu Marido and Me Voy Pa'l Party, and comes with a bonus DVD.
Which guests appear on Vida escante?
Polaco on Nos Fuimos, Trebol Clan, David D'Ambulante and Taina on Sacando Chispa, R.K.M & Ken-Y on Pasado and Me Estoy Muriendo, Lito MC Cassidy on both versions of Siguen Haciendo Ruido, Don Chezina and Taina on Como Tú Me Pisas, and Shaka & Benny on Ya No Me Llamas.
Data note: Per-track producer and guest credits are corroborated by the Discogs transcriptions of the 2004 CD and the 2005 special edition, the Spanish Wikipedia track table and Genius. Songwriting credits rest on Genius alone: MusicBrainz holds no work or artist relationships for any recording on this release and Discogs transcribes no writing credits, so the lyricist and composer lists could not be cross-checked. No published legal name was found for David D'Ambulante, Shaka Black, Benny or the members of Trebol Clan, so they appear as lyricists only.
