By the Numbers
My Chemical Romance's debut was written collectively in the band's earliest lineup, with Gerard Way supplying the lyrics and Ray Toro shaping much of the guitar-driven music; the song credits run to Way, Toro, Mikey Way and original drummer Matt Pelissier. Gerard Way drafted material such as 'Vampires Will Never Hurt You' in his parents' basement in the wake of the September 11 attacks, drawing on his background as a comic artist. It was produced by Geoff Rickly, frontman of the band Thursday, whose connection helped MCR land on Eyeball Records, and engineered at Nada Recording Studio by John Naclerio. The record was overlooked on release and only began charting after the band's 2004 breakthrough.
The debut studio album by My Chemical Romance, released on July 23, 2002 through Eyeball Records. Produced by Geoff Rickly of Thursday, who connected with the band through the New Jersey post-hardcore scene, it captures an early raw sound rooted in post-hardcore and emo. The album opens with an instrumental arrangement of a traditional melody before launching into the band's original material, all of which is credited collectively to the five-piece lineup. Alex Saavedra co-produced tracks 3 and 8. The record sold modestly on its own but built a cult following that paved the way for the band's signing to Reprise Records.
