Data Insight

Joanne strips back Lady Gaga's pop spectacle toward a rootsier, more personal sound, named after her late aunt. She co-wrote every track, working with producers Mark Ronson, BloodPop, and Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, with Florence Welch guesting on Hey Girl.

Joanne is the fourth studio album by Lady Gaga, released in October 2016 on Interscope/Streamline Records and produced by Mark Ronson, Josh Homme, BloodPop, and Gaga herself, a deliberate stylistic departure from the electronic pop spectacle of the first four albums toward a more stripped acoustic, country-folk, and rock-influenced sound named after Gaga's late aunt Joanne Germanotta, who died of lupus in 1974 at age 19. Gaga wrote or co-wrote all her own material; the album is the most personally autobiographical of her studio records, addressing family grief, identity, fame, and the vulnerability beneath the persona in terms that foreground Gaga Germanotta rather than the Lady Gaga construct, a thematic pivot facilitated by the more acoustic production framework, in which the absence of electronic sheen made emotional directness more audible. 'Perfect Illusion' was the lead single and reached the top twenty on the Billboard Hot 100; the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 168,000 first-week units. Joanne's release was accompanied by a Super Bowl LI halftime performance in February 2017 that drew over 117 million viewers, widely considered one of the best halftime performances in the event's history, and a stadium world tour, positioning it as a commercial and cultural event despite modest streaming numbers. The album represents the furthest Gaga has moved from her electronic pop foundations and demonstrated the stylistic range available to her beyond the dance-music context of her commercial peak.
