Data Insight

Harlequin is a companion album to the film Joker: Folie à Deux, in which Lady Gaga played Harley Quinn. It is mostly jazz standards she interprets rather than writes, with reworked arrangements, plus two originals she co-wrote, Folie à Deux and Happy Mistake. On most of the record she is the interpreter, not the author.

Harlequin is the sixth studio album by Lady Gaga, released in September 2024 on Interscope Records as a companion soundtrack to the film Joker: Folie à Deux, in which Gaga starred as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix, rather than as a standalone studio statement, making it the most contextually specific release in her catalog since the Fame Monster's connection to the Fame era. Gaga wrote or co-wrote the original material; the album blends newly recorded original compositions with reimagined versions of American Songbook standards and older pop songs performed in character as Harley Quinn, with production that draws from the film's musical framework of live-performance musical sequences set in institutional and courtroom settings. 'Happy Mistake' and 'Good Morning' are among the original tracks; the album also features Gaga's interpretations of 'That's Entertainment,' 'The Joker,' and other songs recontextualized within the film's diegetic musical performance sequences. Harlequin debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in its release week, driven partly by Gaga's existing fanbase and partly by the promotional association with the film's theatrical release, making it Gaga's sixth number-one album in the United States. Critical discussion of the album was inseparable from discussion of the film itself, which received mixed-to-negative reviews and significantly underperformed at the box office relative to the 2019 original Joker.
