Data Insight

Kylie is the clearest example of the outside-written model that opened Minogue's career: Stock Aitken Waterman wrote, produced, and arranged nearly every track, so her name appears in no writing credit on the standard album. The lone exception to their pen is 'The Loco-Motion,' a Gerry Goffin and Carole King cover. As a record it documents Minogue purely as a vocalist, the starting point of an arc that would see her move from interpreter to author over the following decades.

Kylie is the debut studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, released in July 1988 on the PWL label. It was written, produced, and arranged almost entirely by the British hit factory Stock Aitken Waterman, with Minogue contributing vocals rather than songwriting. The bright, fast-moving dance-pop sound carried the worldwide hit 'I Should Be So Lucky' and her chart-topping cover of 'The Loco-Motion,' and the record topped the UK albums chart. It established Minogue as a pop star at nineteen and set the template for her first run of SAW-produced albums, on which the trio wrote the material and she delivered it.
