Ice Cube wrote his own verses across War & Peace Vol. 1 (The War Disc), the harder-edged first half of his two-part concept. Production came from a Lench Mob-leaning crew including Bud'da, N.O. Joe, E-A-Ski, T-Mix and Cube himself, plus Butch, T. Walker and M. Demby. The lead single 'Pushin' Weight,' featuring Mr. Short Khop, was produced by N.O. Joe and co-written by Cube with Lionel Hunt (Mr. Short Khop); the album also paired Cube with Korn on 'Fuck Dying.'
Ice Cube's fifth studio album, released November 17, 1998, his first in five years following an extended run as a film actor. The project blends intense street-oriented hip-hop with rap-metal influences and political commentary, reflecting the eclectic production landscape of the late 1990s. Key producers include N.O. Joe, Bud'da, T-Mix, and Ice Cube himself. The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200, selling 180,000 copies in its first week, and was certified platinum by January 1999. A guest spot from Korn on "Fuck Dying" pointed toward the rap-rock crossover that was sweeping mainstream music at the time. It was the first volume of a planned two-disc project, with the Peace Disc arriving in 2000.
