The Authorship Story

Data Insight

Halsey holds a writing credit on every track across all five studio albums, a consistency rare in mainstream pop. Her collaborator profile shifts dramatically by album: Badlands relies heavily on Lido (Peder Losnegård); Hopeless Fountain Kingdom adds Greg Kurstin and Ricky Reed; Manic brings in Greg Kurstin, Benny Blanco, and Finneas; If I Can't Have Love is exclusively Reznor/Ross; The Great Impersonator draws from indie-rock circles including Alex G and Stuart Price. The lyricist credit never leaves Frangipane across all five records. Every word is hers.

The Story

Halsey is the stage name of Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, an American singer-songwriter born September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey. She built a following on SoundCloud before releasing her debut album Badlands (2015) on Astralwerks, establishing her signature blend of dark electropop and confessional lyricism. Her third album Manic (2020) crossed into mainstream country and rock territory, while her fourth, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (2021), was produced entirely by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross in a theatrical art-rock direction. Her fifth album The Great Impersonator (2024) featured collaborations with indie artists including Alex G. Halsey has been public about her diagnoses of bipolar disorder and endometriosis, themes that recur throughout her lyrics.
