Data Insight

The Great Impersonator is built around Halsey writing each song as an imagined version of how her music might have sounded in a different decade, channeling artists from Dolly Parton, Cher, Stevie Nicks and David Bowie through to PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, The Cranberries, Evanescence and Bjork. The conceit grew out of her lupus and T-cell disorder diagnoses, which left her feeling like she was impersonating herself, and she co-wrote and co-produced the record around that confessional framing. The authorship works on two levels at once, with Halsey assuming the voice of a chosen influence on each track while keeping the lyrics rooted in her own health crisis and identity. The era-hopping is structural rather than cosmetic, with the production on each song shaped to match the artist and decade it pays tribute to.

Halsey's fifth studio album, released October 25, 2024, on Columbia Records. The most experimental and stylistically diverse entry in her catalog, The Great Impersonator draws from indie rock, baroque pop, and art rock, with collaborators including indie artist Alex G (Alexander Giannascoli) and songwriter-producer Stuart Price. The 18-track standard edition includes three 'Letter to God' variations across different years. 'Lucky' is a cover of Britney Spears' 2000 single, carrying writing credits for Max Martin, Rami Yacoub, and Alexander Kronlund. Track 2 and several others feature Michael Uzowuru as a key producer.

Frequently Asked Questions The Great Impersonator

What is the concept behind Halsey's The Great Impersonator?
The Great Impersonator is a confessional concept album in which Halsey imagines how her music would have sounded across different decades, from the 1970s to the 2000s. Each song channels a specific artist or era, with influences spanning Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, Dolly Parton, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush and Bjork. The idea came from Halsey feeling like she was impersonating herself after being diagnosed with lupus and a T-cell disorder.
What is the song Lucky by Halsey about?
Lucky channels Y2K pop and interpolates Britney Spears' 2000 song of the same name along with Monica's 1998 track Angel of Mine. The song reflects on fame and isolation, and its Gia Coppola-directed music video draws on Britney Spears' story. It was the only single from the album to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, where it debuted and peaked at number 88.
Which artist does Ego by Halsey channel?
Ego channels the 1990s and was inspired by Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries. The track leans on a 1990s alternative sound to match that influence. Its music video was styled to reflect the same era.
Who inspired the song Lonely Is the Muse by Halsey?
Lonely Is the Muse channels Amy Lee of Evanescence. As part of the album's promotional countdown, Halsey recreated Evanescence's well-known album cover to tease the track. The song fits the album's wider concept of impersonating different artists and eras.
Did Halsey write The Great Impersonator herself?
Yes. Halsey wrote and co-produced The Great Impersonator, working with collaborators including Alex G, Michael Uzowuru, Greg Kurstin, Tyler Johnson and Emile Haynie. The album is described as confessional and is rooted in her own experience with lupus and a T-cell disorder. Multiple producers are credited across individual tracks.
How did Halsey promote The Great Impersonator?
Halsey ran an 18-day countdown in which she impersonated a different artist each day to tease a corresponding song. The campaign mirrored the album's central idea of channeling different artists and decades.
What inspired the song I Never Loved You by Halsey?
