Blonde is Frank Ocean's deepest auteur statement, and its credits are deceptively quiet: he wrote or co-wrote every track and is the constant in the lyricist column, while the composer column hides a sprawling cast and surprising interpolations from the Beatles to Elliott Smith. The clearest exception is 'Solo (Reprise),' written and performed almost entirely by André 3000, where Ocean steps back to producer. Everywhere else the words and vision are his, the sound assembled from many quiet collaborators.
Blonde is the second studio album by Frank Ocean, self-released in August 2016 through his own Boys Don't Cry label, a day after the visual album Endless fulfilled his Def Jam contract. Spare, ambiguous, and deeply personal, it strips away conventional song structure in favor of drifting, guitar-and-voice meditations on memory, identity, and lost love. Frank Ocean wrote or co-wrote every track and shaped the album over years with a wide circle of collaborators, including Malay, Om'Mas Keith, James Blake, and Jon Brion, while the credits hide an unusually deep guest pool. André 3000 takes the entire 'Solo (Reprise),' Beyoncé adds backing vocals to 'Pink + White,' and interpolations range from the Beatles to Elliott Smith. Ocean declined to submit the album for Grammy consideration, and it has since been named one of the best albums of its decade.
