Ghost Stories continues Coldplay's practice of crediting all songs collectively to Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion. The band produced the record alongside Paul Epworth, Dan Green and Rik Simpson, with the quieter, more electronic palette shaped by guest production from Jon Hopkins, Madeon and Timbaland. The most prominent outside contributor is the Swedish DJ Avicii, who co-produced and helped write the dance single 'A Sky Full of Stars,' giving the otherwise introspective album its one euphoric, club-oriented moment. The lyrics across the album are widely read as Martin's response to his separation from Gwyneth Paltrow.
Ghost Stories, released May 19, 2014, is Coldplay's sixth studio album, a spare, introspective record widely understood as Chris Martin's meditation on the end of his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow. The album strips away the stadium bombast of Mylo Xyloto in favour of acoustic textures, reverb-heavy production, and raw emotional vulnerability. 'A Sky Full of Stars,' co-written with Avicii and produced by him, is the album's most energetic track and became a major commercial hit. Ghost Stories debuted at number one in over thirty countries and sold over seven million copies.
