As with the rest of their catalog, Coldplay credit every song on A Rush of Blood to the Head collectively to the four band members, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, and Chris Martin. Ken Nelson returned to produce the record with the band, while Danton Supple mixed several of its key tracks. That group-writing convention shaped a more expansive sound than the debut, with the piano-driven 'Clocks' and 'The Scientist' and the urgent 'In My Place' all emerging from the collective rather than a single named author.
A Rush of Blood to the Head is Coldplay's second studio album, released August 26, 2002, on Parlophone. Winning the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, it is widely regarded as the album that cemented Coldplay's status as one of the world's biggest rock bands. The album expands the sonic palette of Parachute with grander arrangements, more dynamic contrasts, and a heightened emotional intensity. 'The Scientist' became one of the most beloved ballads of the decade, 'Clocks' (built on Martin's famous repeating piano riff) became a global number-one hit and won the Grammy for Record of the Year, and 'In My Place' served as the propulsive lead single. The album moves between hushed introspection ('Green Eyes,' 'Warning Sign') and sweeping grandeur ('Politik,' 'A Rush of Blood to the Head,' 'Amsterdam'), which established the emotional range that would define Coldplay's live shows.
