By the Numbers
Jerry Cantrell writes on all eleven tracks and William DuVall on two, so the balance swings back to one writer after the 1995 record shared it four ways. Elton John plays piano on the closing song, which is written for Layne Staley. No outside writer takes a credit.
Black Gives Way to Blue came out on Virgin and EMI in September 2009, fourteen years after the last album and the first with William DuVall singing. It is certified gold and "Check My Brain" reached number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100.
