Mezmerize is the first half of the Mezmerize/Hypnotize double release and marks Daron Malakian's expanded role as co-lead vocalist, splitting vocals with Serj Tankian on many tracks. Malakian wrote all of the music except 'Question!,' which he co-composed with Tankian, while Rick Rubin and Malakian produced. The Grammy-winning lead single 'B.Y.O.B.' was written as a protest against the Iraq War. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 453,000 copies in its first week.
Mezmerize opened the band's two-part 2005 release on May 17, entering the Billboard 200 at number one on over 450,000 first-week copies. Daron Malakian produced it with Rick Rubin and wrote all the music except 'Question!,' which he composed with Serj Tankian, and he splits lead vocals with Tankian across most of the eleven tracks. 'B.Y.O.B.,' a protest song about the Iraq War, won Best Hard Rock Performance at the 2006 Grammy Awards. The cover was painted by Vartan Malakian, the guitarist's father, as one half of an image completed by Hypnotize.
