Hypnotize is the second half of the Mezmerize/Hypnotize double release, recorded alongside its companion and issued about six months later in 2005. Daron Malakian wrote the music and shared lyric credits with Serj Tankian, and his co-lead vocal role peaked here: he wrote and sang lead on 'Lonely Day.' Rick Rubin and Malakian produced, with David Schiffman engineering and Andy Wallace mixing. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Hypnotize closed the pair on November 22, 2005, six months after Mezmerize, and also entered the Billboard 200 at number one, on 320,000 first-week copies. That made System of a Down the fourth act to put two albums atop the chart in the same year, after the Beatles, 2Pac and DMX. Rick Rubin and Daron Malakian produced, and Malakian wrote and sang 'Lonely Day,' the second single after the title track. The album has sold 8 million copies worldwide, and its cover, painted by Vartan Malakian, completes the picture begun on Mezmerize.
