Data Insight

Metamorphosis was produced by Jay Baumgardner with James Michael as co-producer; Mike Shipley handled mixing and Ted Jensen mastered at Sterling Sound. James Michael also co-wrote lyrics on several tracks alongside Jacoby Shaddix, marking one of the first instances of outside co-writers on a Papa Roach album. Lifeline became the band's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, holding that position for six weeks. The album introduced drummer Tony Palermo, who replaced Dave Buckner in 2007, and features a guitar solo from Mötley Crüe's Mick Mars on Into the Light.

Metamorphosis is the fifth studio album by Papa Roach, released in March 2009 on Geffen/Interscope Records and produced by James Michael and John Feldmann, the band's most sonically diverse album, incorporating industrial rock, electronic elements, and power pop alongside the hard rock of the Paramour approach. Shaddix wrote all lyrics; the album's 12 tracks include 'Hollywood Whore,' 'Lifeline,' and 'I Almost Told You That I Loved You' among the principal tracks. The album debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified gold in the United States; 'Hollywood Whore' reached the top five on the Mainstream Rock chart. Metamorphosis represents the band's most commercially experimental release and the furthest point of their stylistic exploration from the Infest-era nu-metal formula. Metamorphosis' sonic diversity, its willingness to incorporate industrial and electronic production alongside the hard rock of the core catalog, represented the furthest point of the band's creative exploration at a time when the hard rock genre was itself in significant commercial and creative transition, and its gold certification confirmed the commercial resilience of the Papa Roach identity across stylistic changes.
