By the Numbers
Nevermind was written primarily by Kurt Cobain, with the breakthrough single Smells Like Teen Spirit co-credited to all three members, Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic. Butch Vig's clean production and Andy Wallace's mix gave the band's punk energy a radio-ready sheen that broke grunge into the mainstream.
Nevermind is the second studio album by Nirvana, released in September 1991 on DGC Records and produced by Butch Vig at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, with additional production and mixing by Andy Wallace, and the album that made alternative rock the dominant commercial genre in American music. The week of January 11, 1992, Nevermind displaced Michael Jackson's Dangerous from the top of the Billboard 200, an event widely cited as the end of the hair-metal era and the beginning of the mainstream alternative boom. Cobain wrote all lyrics and melodies across the 12 tracks; Grohl composed the music to 'Drain You' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was credited as a Cobain/Novoselic/Grohl collaboration following Grohl's contribution of the opening drum pattern. The production by Vig and Wallace famously over-polished the band's sound, particularly through the Andy Wallace reverb-heavy mix, which Cobain later disavowed, describing the album as 'too slick' and driving him deliberately toward the abrasive Steve Albini production of In Utero. Nevermind has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, contains the defining alt-rock single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' and is the most commercially successful album in the Sub Pop-adjacent independent scene's history even as it was released on a major label.
