In Utero is the band's abrasive final studio album, with Kurt Cobain writing all of it except two tracks co-written with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. Recorded by Steve Albini for a raw, live sound, it was a deliberate reaction against the polish of Nevermind.

In Utero is the third and final studio album by Nirvana, recorded in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, produced by Steve Albini, chosen by Cobain specifically for his anti-commercial, high-fidelity recording philosophy, and released on DGC Records in September 1993. The album was a direct reaction to what Cobain perceived as the overproduced softness of Nevermind; Albini's approach used natural room acoustics, close-miked live drums, and minimal overdubs to capture the band's live sound with deliberate harshness. DGC and Geffen requested remixes of 'Heart-Shaped Box' and 'All Apologies' by Scott Litt, a compromise Cobain ultimately accepted, making those two tracks the only significant departures from Albini's original recording on the final release. Cobain wrote all lyrics and melodies; the songwriting credits follow the same Cobain/Novoselic/Grohl structure as Nevermind, though Cobain's authorship of the lyrical content was essentially total. In Utero debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and reached the same position in the UK, and it would prove to be the band's final studio record, Cobain died in April 1994, six months after its release, making it simultaneously the most artistically uncompromising album in the Nirvana catalog and a definitive closing statement.
