Khalid co-wrote every track on his debut, building the record with a rotating cast of producer-writers rather than a single architect. Joel Little, the New Zealand producer behind Lorde's breakout, co-wrote and produced standout material, while Syk Sense served as a frequent collaborator and the breakout single 'Location' credits a wide writing team including Joshua Scruggs, Chris McClenney and Olatunji Ige. American Teen is the first studio album by American singer Khalid, released on March 3, 2017 through Right Hand Music Group and RCA Records. A blend of contemporary R&B and teen pop, it was produced by Joel Little, Syk Sense, and others, and built around Khalid's relaxed, conversational vocal style. Its singles include "Location," which reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Young Dumb & Broke," both of which earned Grammy nominations. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and was certified four times platinum by the RIAA. Critically praised as a teen-pop milestone, it established Khalid as one of the defining young voices of late-2010s pop and R&B.
