Data Insight

ye is a brief, seven-track album Kanye West recorded in Wyoming, credited to West as lead writer and producer with help from Mike Dean and others. It deals openly with his mental health, and 070 Shake's hook on Ghost Town became one of its standout moments.

ye is the eighth studio album by Kanye West, released in June 2018 on GOOD Music/Def Jam Records, recorded in three weeks at a ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and released as a seven-track, 23-minute LP that is the shortest studio album in his catalog by a significant margin. West wrote all his own material; the album was conceived and released in the immediate aftermath of West's public series of pro-Trump statements, comments minimizing the history of American slavery, and documented struggles with bipolar disorder, the latter of which is the album's central lyrical subject, most directly on 'Yikes,' where the line 'That's my superpower / being bipolar with a superpower' became one of the most widely discussed lyrics of the year. The cover image, a cell phone photo of a mountain road with the handwritten caption 'I hate being Bi-Polar its awesome', generated commentary both as an aesthetic statement and as a public health conversation. ye debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, sold 208,000 first-week copies in album-equivalent units, and received mixed critical reviews that were inseparable from the context of West's behavior in the preceding weeks. The album was one of five GOOD Music albums released in a five-week period in the summer of 2018, a coordinated batch strategy that also included projects from Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Teyana Taylor, and a collaborative West/Cudi project.
