Data Insight

Electric Ladyland is the album where Jimi Hendrix took full production control, and he wrote thirteen of its sixteen tracks. The outside material is limited to 'All Along the Watchtower' by Bob Dylan, 'Little Miss Strange' by bassist Noel Redding, and 'Come On (Part 1)' from Earl King's R&B catalog. Everything else, including the sprawling 'Voodoo Chile' and 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return),' is Hendrix's own, confirming a writer-producer in complete command of his material.

Electric Ladyland is the third and final studio album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience released during Jimi Hendrix's lifetime, a sprawling double album issued on Reprise Records in October 1968. Hendrix dismissed original producer Chas Chandler during recording and assumed complete production control, turning Record Plant in New York into a laboratory where a rotating cast of guests (among them Steve Winwood, Jack Casady, and Buddy Miles) contributed to his most ambitious project. The album's non-Hendrix tracks are few but significant: 'All Along the Watchtower' (Bob Dylan) is widely considered the definitive recording of the song, an assessment Dylan himself has endorsed; 'Little Miss Strange' was contributed by Noel Redding; and 'Come On (Part 1)' is drawn from Earl King's New Orleans R&B catalog. 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)' stands as one of rock's most complete expressions of guitar mastery, while the extended 'Voodoo Chile' documents Hendrix in full improvisational flight alongside members of The Steve Miller Band and Jefferson Airplane. Electric Ladyland was the only Hendrix album to reach number one in the US and remains one of the most fully realized double albums in rock history.
