By the Numbers
Jimi Hendrix wrote twelve of the thirteen tracks on Axis: Bold as Love, including 'Little Wing,' 'Castles Made of Sand,' and the title track. The lone exception is 'She's So Fine,' written and sung by bassist Noel Redding, the only song on the album not from Hendrix's pen. The record shows his songwriting deepening beyond guitar showcases into ballads and structured pop, with the writing almost entirely his own.
Axis: Bold as Love is the second studio album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, released in December 1967 on Track Records, arriving just seven months after the debut album. The record shows Jimi Hendrix's songwriting maturing rapidly: 'Little Wing,' 'Castles Made of Sand,' and 'Bold as Love' display a lyrical sophistication and emotional depth that surprised critics who had focused primarily on his guitar pyrotechnics. Hendrix wrote twelve of the album's thirteen tracks; 'She's So Fine,' composed by bassist Noel Redding, is the sole exception and the only track on the album not in Hendrix's voice or creative register. Producer Chas Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer pushed into more adventurous territory with layered vocals and innovative stereo panning that gave the album an almost hallucinatory spatial quality. Though initially considered less explosive than the debut, Axis: Bold as Love is now recognized as one of the essential records of the psychedelic rock era.
