Gwen Stefani co-writes across her solo debut, but the record is built as a producer-driven showcase that pairs her with a rotating cast of A-list hitmakers rather than one sonic team. The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) produced the cheerleader-chant number 1 'Hollaback Girl,' Linda Perry and Nellee Hooper shaped lead single 'What You Waiting For?,' Dallas Austin co-wrote and produced 'Cool,' and Tony Kanal carried over the No Doubt songwriting partnership. Dr. Dre and Andre 3000 round out the eclectic, genre-hopping cast. The deliberate variety of collaborators is what gives the album its scattered, dance-to-new-wave-to-hip-hop range.
Stefani's solo debut came out on 12 November 2004 and sold 309,000 copies in its first week, entering the Billboard 200 at number seven before climbing to number five seven months later. 'Hollaback Girl' gave her a US number one and became the first single to sell a million digital copies in America. The album has sold more than eight million copies worldwide and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2006 Grammys.
