By the Numbers
The Fall is the clearest single-author record in the catalog: every track is written by Damon Albarn alone, with no co-writers anywhere on the standard edition. The performer column is just as concentrated, with Albarn singing nearly everything and only Bobby Womack stepping in as a featured voice on 'Bobby in Phoenix.' Made on an iPad during a tour, it strips the Gorillaz model down to one writer and one voice.
The Fall is the fourth studio album by Gorillaz, first released as a free download for fan club members on Christmas Day 2010 and given a wide release in April 2011. Damon Albarn recorded the entire album on an iPad and other portable devices while touring North America, writing a track in each city the band visited. Every song is written by Albarn alone, making it the purest authorship statement in the catalog, with the only notable guest being Bobby Womack on 'Bobby in Phoenix' and former Clash guitarist Mick Jones adding parts. The result is a loose, atmospheric travelogue that trades the guest-heavy spectacle of earlier albums for a personal, self-contained sketchbook of a tour.
