Burlap & Satin sets Parton's own writing against a handful of outside cuts, the contrast its title promises. Six of the ten songs are Parton originals, including the autobiographical "Appalachian Memories," which traces her family's roots and migration, alongside "A Gamble Either Way" and "A Cowboy's Ways." The borrowed material reaches into different traditions: Hank Locklin's country standard "Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On," the Barnes and Robertson ballad "I Really Don't Want to Know" sung as a duet with Willie Nelson, and the synth-pop "Potential New Boyfriend" by Steve Kipner and John Lewis Parker. That last cut pushed Parton toward the dance and pop audience even as her own compositions kept the record anchored in country.
Released May 2, 1983, on RCA Records, Burlap & Satin was Parton's twenty-fifth solo studio album, recorded around February 1983 and representing a transitional blend of pop and country styles midway through her RCA tenure. Dolly Parton and Gregg Perry co-produced the record, and the album consisted primarily of Parton's own compositions. Two tracks originated from her work on The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas film ('A Cowboy's Ways' and 'A Gamble Either Way') while a duet with Willie Nelson on Eddy Arnold's 'I Really Don't Want to Know' and a track featuring Linda Ronstadt's backing vocals added notable collaborator credit. The lead single 'Potential New Boyfriend,' co-written by Steve Kipner and John Lewis Parker, became a top-20 country hit and was the vehicle for Parton's first music video. The album peaked at number 5 on Billboard's Top Country Albums and number 127 on the Billboard 200.
