By the Numbers
Backwoods Barbie was the first release on Dolly Parton's own Dolly Records label, and the writing credits show how firmly she steered it herself. Parton wrote eight of the twelve tracks alone, including the autobiographical title song, which she had originally penned for the character Truvy in her stage musical "9 to 5: The Musical." She co-wrote the opener "Better Get to Livin'" with her bandleader and producer Kent Wells, while "Jesus & Gravity" came from outside writers Betsy Ulmer and Craig Wiseman. The two covers are Smokey Robinson's Motown classic "The Tracks of My Tears" and the Fine Young Cannibals hit "She Drives Me Crazy," reworked here as a country number titled "Drives Me Crazy."
Released February 26, 2008, Backwoods Barbie was Parton's forty-second solo studio album and her first mainstream country album in nearly a decade, launched on her newly formed Dolly Records label. The album was co-produced by Parton and Kent Wells, originating from casual demo sessions in 2006 before evolving through title changes that included Country Is as Country Does and Blue Smoke. Parton wrote or co-wrote the majority of the tracks, including collaborations with Craig Wiseman and Betsy Ulmer on 'Jesus & Gravity,' alongside covers of Fine Young Cannibals' 'She Drives Me Crazy' and Smokey Robinson's 'The Tracks of My Tears.' The album sits firmly in traditional country territory, balancing autobiographical material with heartbreak narratives and Parton's personal philosophy about the genre. It debuted at number 2 on Billboard's Top Country Albums and number 17 on the Billboard 200 with 27,000 first-week copies, earning a Metacritic score of 70/100.
