Motion continues Harris's near-total production autonomy: he wrote all compositions with his collaborators, including 'Summer' (written solo by Harris), 'Blame' (co-written with John Newman), and 'Outside' (co-written with Ellie Goulding). As on 18 Months, featured artists contributed to their own vocal sections while Harris controlled the underlying production framework entirely.
Motion is the fourth studio album by Calvin Harris, released in October 2014 on Columbia Records and self-produced by Calvin Harris. Building on the extraordinary commercial success of 18 Months, the album featured an even more star-studded guest list including Big Sean, Haim, John Newman, Alesso, and Gwen Stefani. The single 'Summer' became his first solo UK chart-topper and a worldwide phenomenon, while 'Under Control' with Alesso reached the top five in multiple countries. Motion debuted at number one in the UK and reached the top five on the Billboard 200, demonstrating that Harris's commercial dominance was no fluke. The album consolidated his position as the world's highest-paid DJ according to Forbes, a title he would hold for multiple consecutive years, and cemented the producer-as-brand model that has since become standard in commercial dance music.
