Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 is the first Calvin Harris album on which he holds zero vocal credits: every featured artist provided the singing and much of the lyrical content while Harris wrote and produced all the instrumental work. This marks the fullest expression of Harris's producer-as-auteur model: he controls the sonic architecture entirely while collaborators fill in the human performances.
Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 is the fifth studio album by Calvin Harris, released in June 2017 on Columbia Records and self-produced by Calvin Harris. The album represented a major sonic reinvention, abandoning the EDM-pop sound of his previous records in favor of warm, analog-influenced funk and soul production reminiscent of 1970s Los Angeles. Featuring Frank Ocean, Pharrell, Katy Perry, Future, Young Thug, Snoop Dogg, and others, the record's extraordinary guest roster underscored Harris's status as one of pop music's most coveted collaborators. 'Feels' with Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean became a warm summer anthem, and 'Slide' with Frank Ocean and Migos was hailed as an instant classic. Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 was widely celebrated as one of the most joyful and sonically sophisticated albums of the year.
