Renaissance has the largest writing credits of any Beyoncé album, because its dance and ballroom foundation rests on heavy sampling and interpolation that pull in pioneers like Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, Green Velvet, and Kevin Aviance through clearances. She co-wrote all sixteen tracks and executive-produced the record, but most songs carry ten or more names once the samples are credited. The album is a curatorial and authorial project at once: her concept and vocals over a reconstructed history of Black dance music.
Renaissance is the seventh studio album by Beyoncé, released in July 2022 as the first act of a planned trilogy and a full immersion in dance, house, disco, and ballroom music. It is a celebration of the Black and queer pioneers of dance music, and its songs are built on a deep web of samples and interpolations that swell the writing credits to dozens of names per track, from Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder on 'Summer Renaissance' to ballroom figures like Moi Renée and Kevin Aviance on 'Pure/Honey.' Beyoncé co-wrote every track and executive-produced the album, working closely with The-Dream, Mike Dean, Nova Wav, and a long list of dance producers including Honey Dijon and Skrillex. Guests include Grace Jones and Tems on 'Move' and Beam on 'Energy.' The album won four Grammy Awards in 2023, the wins that made Beyoncé the most awarded artist in Grammy history.
