The Authorship Story
Data Insight
The credits move in three blocks. The first two albums name people, with Alex Varkatzas on lyrics and Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel and Brandon Saller on music. Then five albums in a row, from A Death-Grip on Yesterday through In Our Wake, credit only Atreyu. From Baptize onward the names come back, with the current line-up plus John Feldmann on every track. That works out to 62 of the 123 tracks naming a member and 72 carrying the band line, with Baptize counted in both because it credits the group and its writers together.

The Story
Atreyu formed in Yorba Linda, California in 1998 and became one of the defining metalcore bands of the 2000s, built on Alex Varkatzas screaming against Brandon Saller's clean singing from behind the drums. Ten studio albums, a four-year break from 2011, and Varkatzas gone since 2020.
Frequently Asked Questions Atreyu
Did Atreyu write their own songs?
Yes. Which name goes on them changes. Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses and The Curse credit Alex Varkatzas with the lyrics and Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel and Brandon Saller with the music. The next five albums credit only Atreyu. From Baptize in 2021 the members are named again, alongside John Feldmann.
Who wrote "Bleeding Mascara"?
Lyrics by Alex Varkatzas, music by Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel and Brandon Saller, the credit that runs across all of The Curse.
Who wrote "Becoming the Bull"?
Atreyu, credited as a band. Every track on Lead Sails Paper Anchor carries the same line. It reached number five on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
What happened to Alex Varkatzas?
Varkatzas sang the unclean vocals from 1998 and left in 2020. He is still credited as an additional lyricist and songwriter on Baptize, the first album made without him.
Dan Jacobs on guitar and Brandon Saller on vocals, both since 1998, with Travis Miguel on guitar since 2000, Marc McKnight on bass since 2004 and Kyle Rosa on drums since 2020.
Did Atreyu break up?
They went on hiatus in 2011 and came back in 2014. Long Live in 2015 was the first album after the return.
A Death-Grip on Yesterday through In Our Wake all print one band credit instead of names. That is a labeling choice, not a claim about who wrote what, and it is why the authorship figure on this page reads lower than the band's actual involvement.
