Kelly wrote her debut alone, here the bulk of the writing belongs to Timbaland and Missy Elliott, credited under their legal names Timothy Mosley and Melissa Elliott. The rest of the songs come from outside teams like KayGee, Rodney Jerkins, and Jermaine Dupri. Aaliyah carries no writing credit on the standard tracks; her role remains the lead vocal over songs built by others.

One in a Million is the second studio album by Aaliyah, released in August 1996 and the record that defined her sound. After parting with R. Kelly, she worked mainly with the then-rising team of producer Timbaland and writer Missy Elliott, whose skittering, futuristic production reshaped contemporary R&B. The pair wrote and produced most of the album, including the title track and 'If Your Girl Only Knew,' with additional cuts from KayGee, Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupri, and others. Aaliyah held almost no writing credits on the standard edition. Certified double platinum, it became one of the most influential R&B albums of the decade.
