Sam Smith again co-wrote throughout The Thrill of It All with Jimmy Napes as the central collaborator, this time bringing in producers Stargate, Malay, Tyler Johnson, Emile Haynie and Timbaland to widen the palette beyond the debut's stripped-back soul. Lead single 'Too Good at Goodbyes' was written by Smith with Napes, Tyler Johnson and Stargate, and its gospel-leaning arrangement set the tone for the record. Steve Fitzmaurice handled production and mixing across the album, with Bob Ludwig mastering.

The Thrill of It All is Sam Smith's second studio album, released 3 November 2017. The lead single "Too Good at Goodbyes" debuted at number one in the UK, making Smith the first artist to debut at the top of the UK Singles Chart three consecutive times. Produced largely by the same team as the debut, Jimmy Napes and Steve Fitzmaurice, the album is more introspective and lyrically direct than its predecessor. "Baby, You Make Me Crazy" incorporates samples from a Kool & the Gang composition, crediting all nine original members as co-writers. The album closes with "Pray," a gospel-influenced track co-produced by Timbaland. Smith again co-wrote all ten tracks.
