By the Numbers
This is a roster album, not a solo record. Billed to P. Diddy & the Bad Boy Family, it hands most of the rapping to the label's signees - Black Rob, Mark Curry, G. Dep, and Loon - who write their own verses, while Combs (Sean Combs) appears in bursts as host, hype man, and executive presence rather than lead writer. The engine underneath is his production crew the Hitmen, with Mario Winans producing or co-producing the bulk of the tracks and outside hitmakers Megahertz ('Bad Boy for Life') and the Neptunes ('Diddy') supplying the two biggest beats. Because so much of the album is sample-driven, the composer credits balloon with the legal names of sampled songwriters, from Al Green and Mabon Hodges on 'Let's Get It' to Chuck Mangione and Ralph MacDonald on 'Back for Good Now.' The authorship split is the whole point: Diddy raps little and writes less, and the Bad Boy Family does the heavy lifting.
The Saga Continues... is the third studio album by Sean Combs, released July 10, 2001 on Bad Boy Records and Arista Records under the name P. Diddy. It is billed to 'P. Diddy & The Bad Boy Family,' a collective credit that puts the label's roster front and center rather than Combs alone, and across its 25 tracks he raps only in stretches while Black Rob, Mark Curry, G. Dep, Loon, Cheri Dennis, and guests such as 8Ball & MJG, Faith Evans, and Carl Thomas carry most of the vocals. The music is built almost entirely by Combs' in-house production team the Hitmen, led by Mario Winans, with outside beats from Megahertz on 'Bad Boy for Life' and the Neptunes on 'Diddy.' It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and spawned the singles 'Let's Get It,' 'Bad Boy for Life,' and 'Diddy.' Sample-heavy and skit-laden, the record functions as a Bad Boy showcase where the featured artists write their own verses and Combs acts as ringleader, host, and executive voice.
