By the Numbers
Libra Scale follows Ne-Yo's usual authorship pattern: he co-wrote all ten tracks, appearing in the composer column under his legal name Shaffer Smith on every song. The lyricist credits pair him with the track's producers and their writing partners rather than outside topliners, since Ne-Yo builds his songs inside the room. The clearest legal-versus-common split is 'Beautiful Monster,' where the Stargate production duo is credited on paper as Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, joined by Sandy Vee's real name Sandy Wilhelm, and 'One in a Million,' where Chuck Harmony writes as Charles T. Harmon. The featured guest Fabolous also earns a writing credit on 'Crazy Love' under his legal name John Jackson. Production is spread across many hands, but the writing spine is consistent: Ne-Yo plus whoever built the beat, which keeps the album his own even as it chases a more European dance sound.
Libra Scale is the fourth studio album by Ne-Yo, released November 22, 2010 on Def Jam Recordings and his own Compound Entertainment. It is a concept album built around a superhero story about three garbage men, Jerome, Clyde, and Leroy, who gain extraordinary powers on the condition that they never fall in love, framing the album's central theme of choosing between money, power, and fame or love. Musically it pushes his contemporary R&B toward Europop and dance, with the Stargate and Sandy Vee production 'Beautiful Monster' as its clearest crossover moment. Ne-Yo, credited by his legal name Shaffer Smith, co-wrote every track and served as executive producer alongside L.A. Reid, while a rotating cast of producers handled individual songs. The album debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 with 112,000 first-week copies and reached number four on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, though its 345,000 domestic copies by late 2012 marked a commercial step down from his earlier run.
