Higher Love on Golden Hour was built around a Whitney Houston recording made in 1999 that was never commercially released during her lifetime; Kygo licensed the vocal from her estate and produced the track around it. The original Higher Love was written by Steve Winwood and Will Jennings. Kygo co-produced Golden Hour with Scott Harris, Lawrie Martin, Petey Martin, Narada Michael Walden, The Gifted, and Nicholas Furlong, in addition to self-producing several tracks.
Golden Hour is the third studio album by Kygo, released in May 2020 on Sony Music / RCA and self-produced by Kygo. Released during the global COVID-19 lockdowns, the album's warm, escapist quality resonated powerfully with listeners seeking emotional refuge, and its nostalgic tropical house sound felt both timely and timeless. Featuring Whitney Houston's posthumous vocals on 'Higher Love', a track that had gone viral in 2019, alongside collaborations with Valerie Broussard, Zak Abel, and Patrick Droney, the album balanced familiarity and freshness. The Houston duet became one of 2019's most-streamed songs and gave the album a cultural anchor that extended its reach far beyond Kygo's existing fanbase. Golden Hour is Kygo's most emotionally resonant album, a meditation on beauty, memory, and the simple human need for warmth.
