By the Numbers
Chinese Democracy was largely the project of Axl Rose, the only original member on it, who is credited as a writer across the album alongside a rotating cast of musicians like Robin Finck, Buckethead, and Tommy Stinson. After more than a decade of recording, the songs are self-written by Rose and his collaborators rather than sourced externally. It is a band album in name with Rose as its central author.
Chinese Democracy is the sixth studio album by Guns N' Roses, released on November 23, 2008 through Geffen Records and Black Frog Records. Famous for a recording process that stretched across more than a decade and tens of millions of dollars, it is the only Guns N' Roses album fronted by Axl Rose without any other classic-lineup member. Produced by Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo, the record blends industrial rock and electronic textures with the band's hard rock foundation, with all lyrics and melodies written by Rose. Its singles include the title track "Chinese Democracy," "Better" and "Street of Dreams," and the album drew contributions from guitarists Robin Finck, Buckethead and Ron Thal. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum despite years of speculation that it would never be released.
