Data Insight

Sergio Kitchens is the only writer on all fifteen tracks, and every other name in the credits belongs to a producer who took a writing share on the beat he built. Turbo, credited as Chandler Durham, works on six of them and brings Omar Perrin and Cameron Griffin along on four, which makes that trio the closest thing the record has to a house band. Florian Ongonga takes the other block, tracks five through seven plus a writing credit on the closer, and his stretch is where "FukUMean" sits. Gunna mixed the album himself, so writing, vocals and final mix all run through one person more tightly here than anywhere else in his catalog.

Gunna announced A Gift & a Curse on his 30th birthday and put it out a day later, six months after pleading guilty to a single racketeering charge in the YSL case and walking free the same day. He mixed all fifteen tracks himself and carried the whole record without a guest verse. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and produced "FukUMean", which reached number four on the Hot 100 and became the second most successful song of his career on that chart.

Frequently Asked Questions A Gift & a Curse

Are there any guest rappers on A Gift & a Curse?
No. Gunna is the only credited lead vocalist across all fifteen tracks. The one outside vocal credit on the record is background vocals from P Litty and Nechie on "FukUMean".
Who produced A Gift & a Curse?
Turbo does the heaviest lifting with six tracks, joined by Omar Grand and Cam Griffin on four of them. Florian Ongonga, credited as Flo, produces tracks five through seven. The rest is spread across Kenny Stuntin, Cubeatz, Fresh Ayr, Larrance Dopson, Swiff D, Aviator Keyyz and more than a dozen others.
What was the biggest single from A Gift & a Curse?
"FukUMean" reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and went to number one on both Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rhythmic Airplay. It spent thirty-two weeks on the Hot 100 and made the top ten in ten countries. "Bread & Butter", released first, peaked at number 48.
Who mixed and mastered A Gift & a Curse?
Gunna mixed the album himself. Florian Ongonga recorded it and Joe LaPorta mastered it.
How did A Gift & a Curse chart in the United States?
It entered the Billboard 200 at number three with 85,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, and reached number one on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
What was happening in Gunna's life when he made this album?
On December 14, 2022 he pleaded guilty to a single racketeering charge in the Fulton County YSL case and was released from jail the same day, with most of a five-year sentence suspended. The album followed six months later, and the first single, "Bread & Butter", speaks directly to the case and the accusations that came out of it.
Data note: Wikipedia and Discogs print several of the writers differently. Discogs has Nils Noeden with an umlaut where Wikipedia has Nils Noehden, and also Leon Kroll, Thomas Kessler with an eszett, Felix Roggenkamper with an umlaut, Amman Moosa Nuram, Sacha Saul Katz, William Paul Winter Clarke, Jeffrey Oliver Robinson, Johannes Selomun Kelete and Chandler Great. The Wikipedia spellings are used throughout so one writer does not become two. Genius carries credits that neither Wikipedia nor Discogs shows: Nils on "Bottom", Ghetto Guitar on "Turned Your Back", Turbo on "Go Crazy" and Roddy Ricch as a writer on "I Was Just Thinking". Those are left out because a single source prints them. Rick Anthony and Sammy Haig appear identically in the writer and producer columns on both Wikipedia and Discogs, so no separate legal name for either was published anywhere read. No mixing credit is published for "IDK NoMore", "Cash Shit" or "Born Rich", so those three carry no mixer rather than an assumed one. Streaming services and MusicBrainz render the album and every track title in lower case; the Wikipedia and Discogs capitalization is used here.
